NYC Blog Post - 10.8.2013

This week's post has a couple East Village newbies but for the most part I headed uptown to traverse some new territory.  So for those in the UWS and Midtown who have felted neglected... enjoy!

EAST VILLAGE

Apiary
Apparently this restaurant has been around since 2008 yet hasn't "blown up" and I have no idea why.  Every time I walk by it I always think "this place is so cute; I need to try it!"  So when an old coworker from L.A. dropped into town I knew exactly where I wanted to go.  We did the chef's tasting menu which they adjust for allergies and also for "diner excitement."  What I mean by "diner excitement" is that if there is a dish on the menu you HAVE to try they will incorporate it into the tasting menu.  I think that's really cool.

The food was beautifully presented and delicious.  It took them awhile to take our order but that could've been because we were so busy catching up that they didn't want to disturb us.  The standouts were the Creekstone New York Strip steak with roasted shallots, creamed spinach and red wine jus (yes, we insisted on this one and it costs extra), the Grilled Octopus with romesco, baby arugula and lemon (another request) and the Hamachi Crudo with avocado, hearts of palm and jalapeno.  Everything just tasted like it came straight from a local farm/ocean.  And the warm chocolate cake and peach tarte tatin were the perfect desserts!  So impressed with this place.  Perfect for a date, family dinner or coworker outing.  Love it!

Babel
My friend was looking for the perfect place for her birthday.  Her criteria was to find a place that she didn't need a list to get all her friends in yet had a club feel with good dance music/vibe that didn't insist on us buying three bottles for an exorbitant amount of money to have the tiny table in the corner.  The fact that they serve hookah was a huge plus!

Babel was the perfect solution.  We had no problem getting everyone in and the manager even gave the birthday girl free shots.  When some of the birthday party got a little too rambunctious dancing on the booth they were very politely asked to get down (no one getting thrown out rashly, etc).  At one point a hookah was broken accidentally and they were still super nice about it.  I was really really impressed.  And it was worth it because I'm pretty sure we spent three times what we expected to because we were having so much fun.  THAT'S how you run a business!  I would 100% come back and highly recommend it for a night out with friends or a birthday.  On another random note I liked how it was a nice combination of lounge and hookah bar.  It wasn't overly themed.

LOWER EAST SIDE

Chloe
I continue to have a love-hate relationship with this place.  I love the look of it, the fact that it's underground and the bouncer (he is the sh*t).  What don't I like?  The people there can be kind of weird/pretentious, it's often too empty to want to dance like an idiot (granted I'm there on random nights), and last time I was there a guy who worked there kept taking pictures of us without permission which was really off-putting and made me want to leave.  Not cool.  Hence this place is sort of dropping on my list of places to hit up late night especially when my alltime fav, Hotel Chantelle, is across the street.

Ken and Cook
Another one that's been on the list for awhile.  I didn't even mean to eat here on Saturday.  My friend and I were running the East River knowing that we would "run to brunch" but I actually had a different place in mind.  Then my friend managed to get a side ache right in front of Ken and Cook and I thought to myself... how convenient!!

Best decision ever...this place is adorable and delicious.  I had the smoked salmon toast (it was a toss up with the fried chicken and biscuits but they had run out of biscuits so forget that).  The toast was thick and warm and toasty just the way I like it.  There was generous helping of fresh smoke salmon and a roast tomato that literally melted into tomato butter when I sunk my knife into and spread it on the bread.  I was in HEAVEN for the 60 seconds it took me to scarf this down.  I wanted to order another one.  I highly recommend and will definitely be back soon.

UPPER WEST SIDE

Jacob's Pickles
This place is all about two things: Pickles and Biscuits.  You don't say.  Those are two of my favorite things!  It took me about two seconds to order a plate of pickles and biscuits with all the fixings (house strawberry and orange preserves, clover honey, and organic butter).  This pretty much meant I just doused everything in honey.

It wasn't until my friend received her order that the food envy began.   I'm pretty sure this is the Southern B.L.T.  which is a biscuit with buttermilk fried chicken, fried green tomato, pickle slaw, and Niman ranch bacon.  As you can see from the photo it was a monster.  She had about two bites and tapped out at which point this B.L.T. and I tangoed.  After demolishing all of it I felt like a winner... until 30 minutes later when my large intestine tried to digest it.  Maybe next time I'll split!  Anyways, it was delicious, our waiter was hilarious and the restaurant has fun picnic table style seating conducive to making new friends.  My only comment was it was kind of expensive for pickles and biscuits.

I wouldn't go back just for a meal there since I'm lazy and this is in the UWS but if you happen by that area definitely make a pit stop.

Osteria Cotta
If you see a theme it's because I spent all day in the UWS.  Osteria was where my day began as part of a 20 person brunch.  We of course did the 2 hour unlimited drink menu with the purchase of a brunch entree.  The drinks were actually really good (mimosas, bloody mary, sangria) considering usually they are watered down or overly alcoholic when you do all-you-can-drink.

We ordered the Eggs in Purgatory which is eggs baked in spicy tomato sauce with creamy polenta.  It was ALOT of polenta and not much egg but I still thought it was really good.  We also ordered a pizza (my friend and I shared our plates) and it was pretty good too although it had too much lettuce on it.  The waitress was a sweetheart and very patient and attentive considering the size of our party and the restaurant itself is cozy and homey.  I don't need to go back but I would recommend it if you find yourself on the UWS.

MIDTOWN

Akdeniz
I was uptown for a lunch meeting and my coworker suggested this place.  He said it was probably the best Turkish food he'd ever had.  It was quite the recommendation and I've always been fairly unimpressed with the food in midtown.  It was SO good!  I had the chicken kebabs and they were juicy and huge.  The assorted "salads" that we got before (babaganoush, hummus, etc) filled me up so I had to take half of it home.  It was just as good as a leftover.  Can't wait to hit this place up again.

Tre Dici Steak
I went here for a work dinner and was surprised at how good the food was considering we were ordering from a prix fix menu.  The winner of the night was the slow baked macaroni with homemade crushed plum tomato sauce, ricotta cheese, hand rolled mozzarella and fontina di val’dosta  finished with basil oil.  It was steaming hot.  The steak I was less impressed with as it was kind of over-done.  I snagged a bite of the lamb chops though and they were excellent.

Weekly NYC Blog Post - 9.17.2013

CHELSEA

The Park
This is SUCH a beautiful restaurant.  I've been wanting to try it and finally had my opportunity when our new coworker started.  Thanks for lunch work!  I insisted on sitting in the garden area and ordered the beet salad with sunflower seeds and goat cheese to stay with the theme.  The food was as beautiful as the restaurant although maybe not as flavorful as I would've hoped.  This would be a GREAT date spot or girl's dinner night.  I would definitely come back even if it is just for drinks.

EAST VILLAGE

Black Iron Burger
I've found myself taking unique ways home from the Lower East Side just to contemplate stopping in here again.  Finger-lickin-good burgers.  I had the Classic with lettuce and pickles and then I added caramelized onions, spicy mayo, cheddar cheese and a fried egg.  It got all over my face, fingers, plate and lap... and did I care?  Absolutely not.  I WILL be back here.  Probably this week.  Oh, and they have damn good cider.

Paul's Burger
Another great burger spot where yet again I went with the burger that featured a fried egg (Texas burger).  Not quite as good as the Black Iron, or as messy, but the wait staff here is a riot.  They have a milkshake called the "Michael Jackson" and when we asked "why that name?" the waitress said, "because it's half black, half white."  Hilarious.  Definitely a dive but a great place to stop after a long day of Beekman beers or 13th Step sports.

Poco
Talk about one of the worst brunches I've had in Manhattan.  In fact it might have been the worst!  I ordered "The Cure" which is soaked tortilla, salsa verde and queso blanco topped with two fried eggs.  It was the only thing on the menu that even looked appetizing.  The resulting dish was far from it with rubbery eggs and chicken that looked like it'd been carved out of a can.  And the tortillas were definitely soaked... soaked and soggy.  Writing about it is making me nauseous all over again!  The one redeeming factor was the throwback 90s jams featuring Backstreet Boys and TLC.  I will NOT be back.

Porchetta
Great pork sandwiches to go but way over priced for the size.  I only buy them when I am already on my street and too lazy to walk anywhere else.  Also be careful... the crispy pork fat is sometimes a little harsh on the pearly whites.  Bite down with caution.  I like it in a pinch though!

FLATIRON

Flatiron Hall
Definitely doesn't have the amazing crowd atmosphere of its brother, Houston Hall, but I didn't mind taking a load off here after work.  I thought the food had more variety, although I LOVE HH's wings and grilled cheese.  Do not leave here without trying the pastrami Reuben spring rolls and the crispy tater tots with bacon and aged cheddar.  I would've ordered three orders if they weren't so expensive.  I think next time I'll hit the downstairs area which is accessible from the slightly hidden staircase in the back of the restaurant.  Bring a coat though... when I checked it out last time it was FREEZING down there.

Ilili
I came here for restaurant week and the three of us ordered a ton of plates so a little hard for me to remember what exactly we had.  However, I do remember the wait staff being above excellent, the food being very tasty and flavorful and the restaurant being pleasing for everything from a girls night out to a romantic date setting to diner with the parents.  One of the better Middle Eastern restaurants I've come across in the city.  I'd come back here!

Vig Bar
One of my friends is a bartender here so my experience might differ but Vig bar offers everything from a casual hangout spot late on a Sunday to a massive weekend night dance party especially in the backroom.  Great beats!

The Yacht Week Croatia Black Route 2013 - The Finale (Solta and Split)

The final pages of the Yacht Week blog including our last night in Split to attend the first ever, ULTRA Europe event.  What are the odds I book this trip in December of last year and just HAPPEN to pick the week that ULTRA is in Split, Croatia?  Cray.

Thursday, July 11, 2013

We left Hvar first thing in the morning and sailed for Solta Island so that we could get a good spot.  This is the day where the Red and Black Routes join together and create a baot raft over over 100+ baots.  And then we raged.  The majority of the day was spent wandering from baot to baot drinking with the friends we'd made over the last few days, jumping into the water and swimming around on lilos.  The skippers blew up a giant inflatable so that people could jump off the top of the catamaran, land on the inflatable and go flying into the air.

It was a day for making new friends including RaverSunnies who came over to say "Hi" to Kukar only to be harassed by us insisting that he sit and stay awhile (with a complimentary beer of course).  As night descended our skipper friends meandered over.  Eggs' poor puppy dog eyes begged for some leftover pasta because he'd eaten at the restaurant and apparently it was terrible.  Our pasta got high marks!  Hugh Jackman and RaverSunnies were introduced to Winston and soon we broke out the glow in the dark wristbands.

After pre-partying on the baot we headed to shore. You walk along the baots to get to the one catamaran that has a wooden plank connecting it to shore which is why it is good to get there early (less baots to get across).  At the top of a bunch of wooden steps is a three-story restaurant/bar called Sismis Cocktail Bar.  During the day you can also order food for pick-up from them or eat at the restaurant.

I was starting to feel a little sad and reminiscent since this is really our last night with everyone because tomorrow the people who have tickets to ULTRA will end up separating from the Yacht Week group.  I spent a solid thirty minutes in a hug-fest with the Lil Bros from Sydney.  Unfortunately I realized too late that I never got last names or contact info!  Hopefully I see them again someday!

As per usual I ran into the Canadians and gave #5 a huge hug that lifted him off the ground.  This immediately made all his friends giggle so I decided to pick them all up too.  Bashful was fairly easy to lift but then I turned to BeachBoy who stands at close to 6'4."  He just smiled down at me while all the other guys told me it was okay and I should give up.  I bent my knees, grabbed BeachBoy around the buttcheeks and not only lifted him into the air but did a little twirl with him too.  HAH.

At this point I had yet again lost track of most of my crew probably because a lot of them were tired.  I started to walk back to the baot when I ran into Kukar.  We had a lovefest too.  She really has been the greatest addition to our baot and the trip.  Love that girl.

A fairly chill night coming off of Hvar but I didn't mind getting a good night's sleep.

Friday, July 12, 2013

We woke up early for the six or so hour trip back to Kremik and decided fairly early on that we weren't going to do the Regatta because we needed to get back for ULTRA.  Basically the last day of Yacht Week in Croatia everyone gets dressed in costume and races each other back to the harbor using the sailing skills you supposedly learned throughout the week.  It was 2-3 knot winds that day so it would've taken us FOREVER to get back so we opted out.  Plus we kind of just wanted to lazily lie on the front of the baot and sleep instead of getting all dressed up in our costumes.  For your enjoyment I've posted some examples of costumes from other people who did do the Regatta.

We arrived in Kremik early which was nice because it meant a shorter line for the gas station.  Gas for the baot ended up being about 160 kuna each.  The good news is that RaverSunnies had helped us snag a hostel in Split (the entire city was sold out thanks to ULTRA) so that we could just crash there after ULTRA instead of taking the 1.5 hour bus ride back to the baot just to disembark tomorrow morning at 9am for another 2 hour taxi ride to the airport.  The only unfortunate part is the hostel was like 55 Euro per person.  Not cheap.

The next few hours were spent cleaning the baot and getting rid of a lot of our stuff so that we wouldn't have to cart it back to the U.S.  We also had our final crew dinner (unfortunately sans Kukar) at the lone restaurant at Kremik which was delicious but took forever. We finished just in time to grab one of the few buses leaving for ULTRA.  It was sad to say goodbye to Kala... she'd been a great baot.

The bus ride (70 kuna per person round-trip although we were only taking it one way) to Split was absolutely outrageous.  We obviously had brought the alcohol we still had left with us on the bus (about 12 beers and a full bottle of Jack Daniels).  We knew we weren't going to spend much time drinking once we got to Split so we downed the beers and then started passing the bottle of Jack.

Somehow we managed to end up on the top of the bus with all the crazy Peruvians and Brazilians.  They managed to chant and sing every single reggaeton song on my Internat'l Spotify playlist which was hilarious.  Most of the skippers we knew ended up on the top level with us as well.  This was the moment when the French skipper, "High School Musical," would get his name.  As I'd mentioned he was the skipper for the Brazilians so he ended up on the top level with us and was forced to take pulls of Jack Daniels just like everyone else.  The only person who didn't look like they were having fun was Eggs whose sad puppy dog eyes earned him a few extra beers.  We also got to know two new skippers, Mac and Mr. McGregor, who were delighted by the offer to take pulls of Jack.

Upon arrival at ULTRA, we lucked out that we were with skippers so we didn't have to wait in the special Yacht Week line to get our tickets.  Yacht Week had VIP tickets that gave access to their VIP lounge section at ULTRA which was a huge bonus.  We had our own bathrooms and our own bar which reduced the amount of lines.

We then piled into two cars to go to the hostel to drop our stuff and pre-party for a few hours.  RaverSunnies would get his nickname because he pounced on Judith's blinking sunglasses begging to wear them and promising he wouldn't lose them at ULTRA.  I would find out the next day that he had dutifully kept track of them, returning them to Judith at the end of the night only to have her bestow ownership upon him due to good behavior.  He was thrilled.

Once everyone had taken a sizable number of Winstons and decked themselves in glow bands we walked back to ULTRA.  Within two seconds of entering I once again lost my entire crew (do you see a pattern here?) and ran smack into High School Musical.  We ended up dancing for hours to awesome EDM DJs before leaving to find pizza.  By the time we left I had finally gotten him to say "yeah, yeah."  He despised that phrase.  For my first time at ULTRA all I can say is...INSANE.

Clearly everything that could've gone wrong last night did.  I remember JagerMan coming back some time in the night and then much much later Judith arriving.  When I woke up at 9am, there was still no sign of Crispy.  Turns out she couldn't for the life of her figure out how to get back to our impossible hostel so she'd stayed at a hotel with a bunch of people she met wandering ULTRA alone.  I was just thankful she was alive and unharmed.  Just goes to show that you have to be a tough cookie to handle Yacht Week.

We all managed to make it to the airport, although Crispy and I would be delayed just long enough to miss our connection in Frankfurt resulting in us staying overnight in the most boring town in history and not making it home until Sunday.  So much for having a day to recover!  Lufthansa did do a beautiful job of taking care of us though.  It was a super easy process to rebook our flight for the next day, immediate shuttle to the hotel, dinner included in the price, etc and shuttle back the next day.  Love that German precision!

Looking back after being home for exactly a month I can tell you that I learned a lot about myself and my friends from that week.  It was a challenging trip but also an entertaining and enlightening one.  I enjoyed myself so much that we've already booked Yacht Week British Virgin Islands for NYE so that's the best review I can give - I'm doing it again.

Here are some of my overall recommendations for those that are thinking about doing it:
  1. The majority of people on the trip are 21-25 so you will likely have the best time if you fall into that age range
  2. The best situation would be to get about 8 people together, split in half and get two baots and fill the rest of the spots with randoms.  It ensures you have your friends but meet new people too.
  3. Select people to go on your baot that:
  • can go all day all night forever (obviously)
  • are probably single (tend to be more social and reduces the "this is our room" mentality since you all end up sleeping on top of each other)
  • aren't private (again there is no such thing as personal space on the baot)
  • are no drama (this one is super important - you can't take sh*t seriously or you will find plenty of things to complain about)
  • are capable (as you can tell from my  blog there are often times on Yacht Week that you find yourself alone because everyone got drunk, hooked up, bailed, blah blah, so you have to be able to make it home on your own)
Stick to the above and I guarantee you this will be one of the best weeks of your life.  It's only been a month but many of these people I know I will see again because of the connections we've made.  We've already had Auz visit NYC and RaverSunnies is coming on BVI as our skipper.  Hope everyone reading this has the opportunity to experience this once (before it gets shutdown haha).

Bon Voyage!
