Final Egypt Itinerary

Man I have been so lazy with this blog and all of a sudden I've written three posts in a week. I promise to try and do better! The loyal readers may remember my post from June 23, 2010 discussing a potential Egypt itinerary. Well it has moved from potential to booked!

However, I must first admit that I officially cheated and hired a travel agent for this trip. I was having a lot of trouble knowing where to go and where to stay since it isn't the safest place to visit for Americans. A special thanks to Linda at Williamette International Travel and GoWay Travel for helping set up this itinerary.

Here is the final itinerary:

Dec 23rd - Leave from LAX
Dec 24th - Arrive in Cairo, Egypt and check into the Movenpick Pyramids Resort
Dec 25th - Day at leisure because it is Christmas Day
Dec 26th - Half day tour of the Citadel, mosques, and Khan Khalili Bazaar
Dec 27th - Full day tour of Sakkara, Memphis, Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx
Dec 28th - Full day tour of Alexandria
Dec 29th - Arrive in Luxor and check into the Sheraton Luxor Resort
Dec 30th - Day at leisure in Luxor
Dec 31st - Full day tour of the West Bank
Jan 1st - Return to Cairo
Jan 2nd - Fly back to LAX

As you can see the beach city was completely axed. This was because I felt like I'd rather spend quality time in Cairo and Luxor rather than feel rushed since we really only have nine days in Egypt. That's why we added in a full day tour of Alexandria since that will make it feel like another stop yet it is way closer than the beach. Please I looked at the weather that time of year and it wasn't particularly promising for a tan. Linda and her team were very helpful to make the trip as customized as possible while staying within the $4,000 budget.

Overall I'm pretty excited, though a little nervous that we will be in Cairo too much. I guess I'll have to let you know once I go!

In addition, since my last post, I have also sent in my passport to get more pages added (yeah I'm awesome) - it costs $82 and takes 4-6 weeks so keep that in mind. You send a check for the money, your passport, and the application to the U.S. State Department. You can get more info here.

I'll keep you posted!

Investigating Egypt

It's that time again! I have essentially fallen in love with Egypt and think it might be my next destination.

To start, I googled "top places to see in Egypt" as well as going to my go-to website, Frommers.com. Between the two I've started to put a list together:
  • The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx
  • Medieval Cairo
  • Abu Simbel
  • Temples of Karnak
  • Felucca on the Nile
  • Valley of the Kings
  • Siwa Oasis
  • Hurghada
  • Luxor Temple
  • Mount Sinai
Of these they are mostly found in or near Cairo, Giza and Luxor. The only ones that are a little out of the way are Siwa Oasis, Abu Simbel, and Hurghada.

So I'm thinking I'm headed there December 23 - January 2. I looked and the flight from LAX to Cairo is about $1,300 on British Airways with a layover in London. You do arrive a day later though. I checked Luxor and the flights are far more expensive. So Cairo it is! The flight from Cairo to Luxor is an hour so it really isn't a big deal.

You also need a visa to get into the country but you can get it upon arrival and it is $15 U.S.

This place is getting better and better. Time to do a little more research on these places of interest to make sure I'm not missing anything awesome.
